Eagles Release B-West.

It’s another sad day for Eagles fans today, in a year that most would soon love to forget. This is absolutely something that the organization needed to do in this cut-throat business, but it doesn’t mean I have to like it. Westbrook went from the most dangerous weapon on the field no matter what teams were playing a couple years ago, to the star who just couldn’t find the field due to injuries. Ultimately the last two are what ended his tenure as an Eagle. Two concussions have possibly ended the career of one of the best dual-threat RB’s the league has ever seen.

Though he never made it through a full season in his 8 year career, he affected every game by playing hurt often (and well) forcing defenses to scheme for him regardless. Watching him play was truly a blessing. For much of his career it was just him and McNabb on offense, yet they continually ranked in the top 10 when everyone knew what was coming.

My most memorable Brian game was in his second year in 2003. The Eagles were down three with a little over a minute left in a defensive slug-fest and it was 4th down for the Giants. On the punt, Westy let it bounce inside the 20 before grabbing it and the foot race was on for 84 yards and the win. Gotta love beating the Giants, and no one did that more than Westbrook. Hopefully, if he finds work somewhere else, he comes back home to Philadelphia when it’s his time so he can retire an Eagle.

Manny Being Manny

It seems we can’t go a season without Manny being Manny, and the season hasn’t even started and it has started! That isn’t a surprise to anyone though!

Manny recently stated that it is his last season with the Dodgers and possibly even his career. He is set to turn 38 on May 30th, so given that he spent a good chunk of last season on the bench for getting in trouble for testing positive for “enhancing drugs” and the rest of the season struggling with inconsistency it isn’t much of a surprise.

This is just Manny speculating the situation right now, as he stated he isn’t 23 anymore. Considering if he comes back another year, it would bring him up to 19 MLB seasons. He would probably benefit from being  DH on an AL team after this season if he does decide to come back, so he won’t have to be running around in the outfield all season.

Be weary of paying big for him in fantasy this season, and be even more weary of keeping him in keeper leagues. If you decide to go the route of having Manny on your team, keep track of him all the time he did say “I won’t be here next year, so I just want to enjoy myself”. As a avid Red Sox fan, those kind of words from his mouth worry me. I still think he holds some good value for fantasy this year, but I wouldn’t bother drafting him until the 6th round, maybe later depending on the size of your league. If you can sell him high, I would probably recommend you do it, but that is just me !

2010 Vancouver Olympics. USA still leads!

Not going to any great lengths to write something detailed about this, but I wanted to post a quick metal update.

The United States leads with 24(7G, 7S, 10B), and trailing behind us is Germany with 18(6G,7S,5B)

Pitchers and Catchers Are Up and Going

So the pitchers and catchers from all teams have reported, and that means the sports nerds are at the table researching who they are going to take in this year’s fantasy baseball drafts. Without giving a full my top 10 from each position (since I suspect a few guys I go up against may read this… I have to keep some secrets), I wanted to go over a few things we learned last year, a few things people think they learned from last year, and a few things the off-season roster shake ups will bring.

  • Please. PLEASE no more debate on who should be your #1 pick in any non auction league. Pujols is a steal as the first pick, how many times can people say that? Hanley Ramirez is a nice consolation prize, but steals can be found later in the draft this year.
  • Despite being on a less than average team, Tim Lincecum should still be your #1 pitching option. The only pitcher that comes close is Halladay, who should improve a bit moving into the NL East.
  • Every year there is a position that is considered weak in terms of fantasy. DON’T overdraft at these positions. Recently it’s been 2B, SS and C. With surprises found every year like Aaron Hill, Marco Scutaro, Miguel Montero and Ben Zobrist you can find good value late or on waivers if you do your homework.
  • The Cubs will be a completely different team statistically this year. They brought in hitting guru Rudy Jaramillo to fine-tune the lineup. They also helped Big Z, Geo Soto and Carlos Silva drop some weight that was far overdue. Not to mention, Soriano should enter the season healthier and had never experienced a season half as bad as last.
  • Stay away drafting rookies or breakout candidates early. I’ve always been a firm believer in take what you know over what could be. Unless the value is warranted, don’t draft “the next Carl Crawford” in the 5th round if his previous best season was more like Willy Tavares.
  • This may seem obvious, but sadly I see this mistake every year. When you find good value on a player due to a lengthy injury history MAKE SURE you draft an extra “starter” at that position. First of all depth is always a good thing, and secondly if you have the same luck I do the player will get injured just when you need him most.
  • That leads me to this… Don’t draft 5 injury riddled players just because they are “bargains” at that point in the draft. Stability is key in a 162 game season.
  • Lastly (for now), pay attention to but be wary of Spring Training. There’s a guy every year who just tears it up and looks like a sure Hall of Famer in the Spring. But it’s worth noting that veterans are trying to get back in the groove or shore up some weak spots, and rookies are trying to learn and get comfortable with big league talent. Meanwhile, the overachievers of the world often have nothing to lose and play balls to the wall for the entire month.

Like I said earlier, most of these may seem obvious, but you will absolutely come across some rookie or stubborn owner will try to get an edge by taking the infamous “shortcut” that never seems to work out. Feel free to add anything in the comments!

Tiger Woods, Believe In Me Again

First of all the golf writers that boycotted the public statement because they were not allowing everyone in the statement room or allowing questions are absurd. You golf writers are not entitled to anything, and Tiger is not obligated to field questions about who he slept with, why, when or anything else that has nothing to do with golf, and everything to do with his wife.

I think the first mistake that Tiger made was that the entire speech was read off a 3 page written speech, understandably so, his rehab clinic that he has been attending probably gave this advice for him to write out something along the lines of this, and present it to the people he was sorry too.

He ended the dispute that his wife attacked him, and beat him the night of the accident and says she deserves praise, and not blame. He did not make any real excuses for himself aside from the fact that he was at fault for everything that happened. The ones statement which may be true or not, says he lost his religion in recent years.

What he did own up too is that: 1. “Lost core values, normal rules didn’t apply to him any longer” 2. “He worked hard his entire life, and he was entitled to enjoy all his surroundings because of money and fame, it was readily available.” 3. He let down family, friends, sponsors and the children that looked up too him

He asked for everyone’s help, he asked that he hopes he can one day if their heart allows it, to be forgiven. After the speech, he got up and went up to everyone in the front row (who was emotional) and gave them a handshake and a hug. They all seemed to be very supportive, and he seemed very emotional while walking off the stage area. I honestly believe he was sincere, where before I though the whole “sex addiction” rehab clinic was just to save face, now I believe it may actually be helpful for him regardless of if he has a sex addiction or not.

Tiger will not be returning to golf anytime soon, he is heading back to the rehab facility tomorrow to continue getting treatment that he claims is working. He pleads with the media to leave his family alone, as this problem was not theirs, but his.  Shame on people for staking out his 2 1/2 year old daughters school and announcing the location of that school, some of you are sick people.  His focus is on his family, golf second, and he basically ended the entire speech with “Believe In Me Again”.

So my question for you, how did you feel the speech went? Did you believe he was being sincere?

Tiger Woods, Apologizes Tomorrow

Like Tracy McGrady it his fault, and he is sorry. It has been a long while since good old Tiger Woods has said anything to the media. Obviously it takes a long time to recover from being caught cheating with not only one woman, but many. There has been so many speculations on what happened, where he went, if he is actually addicted to sex (Really? I can’t help but laugh at that one) and if he and his wife will be able to work it out.

So tomorrow America (probably the entire world) gets what they have been waiting for so long for. Tiger Woods is going to address his past, his future and apologize to most likely family, friends, sponsors and even you for reasons I do not understand.

I get that people are interested in the lives of celebrities, athletes, and anyone else that is in the public eye, it makes sense most of our lives are boring as hell. What I can’t seem to put together is why Tiger Woods has to apologize to anyone more than his family and friends.

I get that he is an idol to young people, he  is was the “American Dream”, he had it all literally. A beautiful wife, beautiful children, money, and some how was almost “perfect” as a human could be. I get all of that, but why are you as a parent, angry at him that your child idolizes him and had to deal with this big disappointing situation? Maybe it is time for your children to look up to you as their hero, maybe you are the one who should say sorry.

I am not all that thrilled that he is basically breaking down this far to apologize to anyone but whom should really be apologized too.

Tomorrow, we shall see what he addresses and what is actually said. If you are interested it will be covered tomorrow by ESPN at 11am est. I will try and recap post about it if time allows me, but I am sure this will be plastered all over the news tomorrow anyways.

Winter Olympics Metal Update

Honestly, I’m not following it closely at all, its rather boring to me except for the snowboarding. Here are the top 5 medal leaders so far:

  1. United States Gold 5 , Silver 3, Bronze 6, Total = 14
  2. Germany         Gold 3, Silver 4, Bronze 3, Total= 10
  3. France              Gold 2, Silver 1, Bronze 3, Total = 7
  4. Canada             Gold 2, Silver 3, Bronze 1, Total = 6

and also tied for 4.

4. Norway             Gold 2, Silver 2, Bronze 2, Total = 6

Sorry for the bad alignment, no time to mess with it. Go United States!

Spring Sports Are Coming!

It’s about time for one of my favorite sport seasons to start. You probably haven’t seen it on TV unless you watch ESPNU religiously or you spared a few hours on Memorial Day weekend to watch your school in a Final 4. Still, there is little doubt that lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in America… if not the fastest. With championship attendance having been over 40,000 in each of the past six seasons, in three of those seasons it was a larger crowd than the basketball championship, lacrosse has become all the rage of the younger crowd in the Northeast in the past decade.

If you’ve never seen it you may think of Lacrosse as the rich, white boys pansy game to play in the school yard. This couldn’t be further from the truth though. It has nearly everything a sports fan could want in a game. There’s undeniable athleticism, incredible hand eye coordination, football-like shiftiness, and even the hard hitting/contact fans desire. Don’t believe me? Tune in for 5 minutes of any college game you can find. Specifically try to find a game with Duke, Johns Hopkins  or Syracuse (the powers).

I’m pretty pumped about the upcoming season. Even though my Orange lost a lot of senior leadership, they will be going for their third straight championship and twelfth overall. They also will be the leaders in a new lacrosse conference as the Big East is finally forming, hopefully further increasing the sports growth. If you get a chance, check out a game this year. I guarantee you’ll enjoy it.

Really?

Nate Robinson for Eddie House? Come on. Am I the only one that thinks that’s RIDICULOUS?

What can little Nate Robinson do for the Celtics? Sure his jumpers in the slam dunk contest can be conceived as amazing (read: not really) but what can this short game do for the Celts really?

Looking at his stats compared to Eddie House, the numbers just don’t add up. Can someone help me figure this out? Because this gal is lost.
